How Kyoto Tango Chirimen Was Born

Kyoto Tango Chirimen was born in 1720s (300 years ago) in Tango Region; Nothern Kyoto facing beautiful Japan Sea, where there is 1300 years of silk weaving history. It is the biggest silk weaving region in Japan. They are receiving well recognition around the world not only for traditional kimono market, but also for modern clothing and interior design markets. Tango Weaving Industries Guild had a 100 years anniversary in 2021, and is looking forward to next 100 years of development.

Japan’s Kyoto Prefecture is collaborating with us to produce a series of videos introducing a few of many products that have long been associated with the culture and history of the region. Many of the techniques and skills required to craft these items have been handed down through generations of artisans and their families, becoming part of the cultural and historical identity of Kyoto.
